Imaginary line dividing our planet

The Tropic of Capricorn is an imaginary line that traces the southern boundary of the Earth’s Tropical Zone and the start of the Temperate Zone.

→

It lies at approximately 23.54 degrees south of the equator and its northern hemisphere equivalent is the Tropic of Cancer. In Australia, the Tropic of Capricorn runs through Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

→

It runs through Rockhampton to Emerald and across where you’re standing right now here in the Sapphire Gemfields and continues along through Longreach and onwards west.

Pub in the scrub

In 1993, some years before the New Royal Hotel opened in Rubyvale, a bottle shop was built around here on the Tropic of Capricorn.

→

On a Friday afternoon, locals would shop at the bottle-o and gather across the road to debrief at the end of a week’s hard toil on the ’fields. In time, they built benches, a leaning rail and a fire pit, and these sessions became an institution for almost a decade.

→

Nearby, you can see the remains of what was known as the Pub in the Scrub – so named because it was a pop-up pub in the bush and was located in an area known as Scrub Lead.
