Who would have thought a public toilet block in Rubyvale could prove to be such a versatile venue!

After a wild storm in November 1977, Rubyvale was left without its 50-year-old community hall when it was blown away by severe winds. The hall had been the town’s official polling booth for the federal election scheduled for 10 December, so organisers needed to find an alternative venue – quickly!

With no other venue available, the returning officers set up a tarpaulin annexe between the two recently built, state-of-the-art public toilets to serve as the official polling place.

A total of 296 locals and 117 visitors, some travelling up to 500 kilometres, cast their votes at the toilet block in the summer heat. It was standing room only in the gents.

It was the Hon. Bob Katter Sr who ultimately scooped the pool, securing more votes than his four rivals combined.
