An oasis on the plains of Arcadia Valley, surrounded by towering sandstone mountains, lined with huge shady trees, Lake Nuga Nuga is a sight to be seen.
At certain times of the year, this natural shallow lake can become completely dry, but after rains, the lake is full and teaming with wildlife.
A bird watchers’ heaven and a photographic delight, be sure to bring a pair of binoculars and an extra memory card for your camera.
This is the perfect place to paddle around in your kayak, or chuck on a pair of joggers and take a walk around the shore line to soak up all the natural beauty that Lake Nuga Nuga has to offer.
Stay for a night or stay for a week. Pack a picnic lunch and do a day trip. Just make sure Lake Nuga Nuga is on your list of places to travel within the Central Queensland Highlands.
Keep an eye out for the sign marking the park’s entrance, because if you blink you might drive right past it, like I did. The drive into the park is short and sweet, however a 4WD is recommended due to the condition of the road. After rain, the road into the National Park can become inaccessible.
There are ample shady camping spots, but be sure to book on the Queensland National Park website. This is bush camping at its best, and there are no amenities. The nearest town is Rolleston and it’s 86km away, so be sure to bring everything you need with you. But most of all, please remember to take all of your rubbish with you, and leave this pristine oasis just the way you found it.Â
