Four days in the Sapphire Gemfields

There’s a moment when something in your sieve catches the light and your stomach drops. It’s pure, it’s instant, and no amount of telling yourself to stay calm makes any difference whatsoever.

That moment is waiting for you in the Sapphire Gemfields, the largest sapphire fields in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the genuinely rare places on earth where finding a precious stone is an everyday possibility.

This four-day itinerary takes you through Anakie, Sapphire, Rubyvale and the Willows Gemfields. All that’s left to do is pack the car.

Day ONE

Start at the Anakie Crossroads with a coffee, then take a moment to look up. The towering Sapphire Reflections artwork marks the gateway to the Sapphire Gemfields and your first stop on the newly refreshed Sapphire Gemfields Geo-Interpretive trail — a series of signs scattered through the ‘fields that tell the stories of the capers, characters, booms and busts.

A few kilometres down the road, Anakie is where you’ll find Sparrows Perch. Cold drinks, friendly locals, no agenda. A fine way to ease into Gemfields life.

Spend the afternoon in Sapphire or Rubyvale getting your bearings at one of the local fossicking parks. Equipment is provided and no experience is required. By the end of the day you’ll have the basics down and possibly your first stone.

Before sunset, take a wander through the Sapphire Gemfields Wetland Reserve. Free entry, wallabies, and a sky that turns every colour you can name. Not a bad first day.

DAY TWO

Now that you’ve got the fossicking basics down, it’s time to take it a step further.

Start the morning on a tag-along fossicking tour. A local guide will take you to working claims and show you where to look and what to look for. Before long, you’ll be spotting things you would have walked straight past the day before.

After a day in the dirt, a cold schooner of Fossicker’s Ale at The New Royal Hotel Rubyvale feels pretty deserved.

Finish the night outside. With no light pollution for miles, the stars are the kind of thing people drive a long way to see – and you’re already here.

day THREE

By now you’ve got a feel for how this place works. Today is yours to go deeper.

Start the morning with an underground mine tour at Miners Heritage. You’ll descend 16 metres below the surface to see exactly how pioneer miners extracted sapphires from the earth. It’s dark, it’s fascinating, and kids find it absolutely wild.

Spend time browsing the gem shops and galleries. The jewellery here is the real thing, cut and set by people who dug the stones out of the ground themselves. Whether you’re buying or just looking, it’s genuinely impressive.

Save the afternoon for wandering. The Sapphire Gemfields rewards slowness: a drive around the mining claims; a stop at the Thong Tree where broken pluggers go to rest; and the Big Ring, Big Spanner and Big Pick and Shovel back in Sapphire if you haven’t found them yet. Let the day find its own pace.

End it at Policeman’s Knob. You’ll need a high-clearance vehicle, possibly directions from a local, and a willingness to scramble. What you get in return: rock wallabies emerging in the late afternoon, and light doing things to the surrounding country that no photograph has ever quite captured.

day FOUR

This is your day to go it alone. Designated fossicking areas are dotted throughout the ‘fields, the Willows Gemfields among them, so pick your spot, grab your equipment, and spend the day working a claim. Get your fossicking licence online before you leave home. No guide, no tag-along. Just you, the sieves, and whatever the ground decides to give up.

There’s a particular kind of patience this requires, and most people find they either take to it immediately or discover something about themselves in the trying. Either way, you’ll leave with something. Whether it’s a stone, a story, or just a very deep appreciation for the people who do this for a living, the day has a way of feeling well spent.

Four days in, and you’re already wondering when you can come back.
