Anakie is the oldest town in the Sapphire Gemfields, with roots stretching back to Queensland’s early railway days. It might be a little quieter than its neighbours, but don’t be fooled, this charming town has a big personality. Rich in history and local legends, and home to a friendly, down-to-earth community, it’s well worth a visit.

SPOT THE SPARKLE
Kick off your visit at Sapphire Reflections, you literally can’t miss it! This 12-metre sculpture glitters with coloured glass and stands tall at the Anakie Crossroads. It’s a tribute to the region’s geology and a great spot for a photo (or three).
Bonus: grab a barista coffee from Brewstar Coffee Cq, weekdays from 6 am.

FOllow the trail
Right next to Sapphire Reflections is the starting point of the Sapphire Gemfields Interpretive Trail, a self-guided adventure through the area’s colourful past. The trail includes five interpretive panels and 30 place markers that bring to life the characters, capers, and the highs and lows of the gem rush.

visit a pub with a past
Locals still talk about the time gelignite blew out the front wall of the Anakie Hotel in 1971. These days, it’s known as Sparrow’s Perch and has a much more relaxed vibe, think cold drinks, pub meals, live music, movie nights, and a few yarns from locals who’ve seen it all.

HOME OF gemfest
Held every August, Gemfest – Festival of Gems brings the whole town to life, and it’s just around the corner! This year’s festival runs from 8–10 August 2025, 9 am to 5 pm daily at Alan King Memorial Park.
There’ll be live music, glittering gemstones and jewellery, artisan markets, food, entertainment for all ages, and plenty of laid-back country charm.

STEP BACK IN TIME
Built in 1884, the Anakie Railway Station was part of the rail push into western Queensland. To supply water for the steam engines, a dam was dug behind the station using just picks and shovels, reaching six metres deep at its lowest point.
Today, the station still welcomes the Spirit of the Outback on its journey between Brisbane and Longreach. The dam remains too, now a quiet spot for recreation and reflection.
