Sapphire Gemfields Wetland Reserve

The Reserve was opened in 2018 and is located on Rockhound Road, Sapphire. Find it on Google Maps here.

The Reserve is a freshwater wetland home to a range of local flora and fauna and includes:

  • More than 3.6km of gravel walking trails, with accompanying educational and directional signage
  • Two viewing areas.
  • A restored fossicker’s dwelling. Built by one of the original residents to the Sapphire area, the Dove family, and a unique glimpse into the way miners lived.

Pick up a copy of the Sapphire Gemfields Visitor Guide for comprehensive information about the Reserve and other attractions in the area.

The project was jointly funded by the Central Highlands Regional Council and the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, which contributed almost $110,000.
